MICRO-SCOPE QUICK START GUIDE

Steps to run Micro-Scope diagnostic software:

  1. Set computer to boot from CD

  2. Insert Micro-Scope CD into the CD drive

  3. Switch on the PC/reboot

  4. Micro-Scope will load automatically and you will get a blue option screen (boot selection menu) - there are various options on this screen which will be explained later and are covered fully in the product manual.

  5. Continue to load Micro-Scope by pressing the number ‘1’ if you wish to run Micro-Scope in graphic mode or select option ‘2’ for text mode.

  6. Micro-Scope will now complete loading

  7. You will then see the ‘Main Option Screen’ that has 5 options

      1. System Configuration
      2. Batch Menu
      3. Diagnostics
      4. Utilities
      5. Quit

When diagnosing a PC, the first thing that you want to know is whether you are looking at a software issue or a hardware problem on the computer.

Micro-Scope can help you do this quickly in the following way;

** NOTE - AT ANY TIME you can hit the 'F1' key for full information on what each particular item does.
  1. Once you have installed Micro-Scope (see installation section) and you are at the main selection screen use the curser keys to select ‘System Configuration’ and press ‘Return’.

  2. Another menu will appear and again, using the down and up arrows on your keyboard, select ‘SYSTEM INFORMATION’ and press ‘Return’.

  3. The ‘SYSTEM INFORMATION’ screen will now be displayed. This screen will give you the data on what hardware is in the computer.

  4. There are 3 screens of data direct from the hardware in the PC. You can scroll through the information using the up and ‘DOWN ARROW KEYS’.
  5. As an example of how this helps you do the following;

  6. Under the section ‘Processor & Bus Information’ you will see the processor speed – (for example 800 mhz) - make a note of this

  7. Press ‘Escape’ to exit this screen and this will take you back to the main Micro-Scope selection screen

  8. Press ‘Escape’ again to take you back to the first menu screen and use the ‘Down’ arrow 3 times and highlight the ‘UTILITIES’ menu option – press ‘Return’

  9. This will bring up another menu – and you need to press the ‘Down’ arrow until you have highlighted the ‘RUN BENCHMARKS’ option – press ‘Return’

  10. A new menu will appear on this far right hand side of the screen – the ‘RUN ALL’ option will be highlighted – press ‘Return’

  11. Micro-Scope will now perform accurate benchmarks (tests to make sure processor is running at the correct speed) on the hardware and display the results when finished
  12. *During this time the screen will go black as Micro-Scope performs the Video memory test – don’t worry, this is normal!

  13. The results of the benchmarks are now displayed on the screen and you should now refer to the processor speed that you noted down earlier from the ‘Processor and Bus’ information screen (eg 800 mhz)

  14. The results of the benchmarks should be more or less the same as the results from the ‘System Information’ for your processor speed – (ie if a processor speed was 800mhz it may be 806 or 779 - approximately the same)
  15. If for example you had an ‘overclocked’ processor (ie. A processor that has been set to run faster than it actually is) then it would be very easy to tell, using these two tests in the Micro-Scope program, as the results on the ‘Benchmark’ test for the processor would be wildly different from the ‘System Information’ screens

  16. Having run these tests, based on the information you wrote down earlier, it will be clear whether it is a hardware issue that you are dealing with, or a software one.
